Celebrating Our Veterans with Baskets of Smiles

November 11th is Veteran’s Day, a day to celebrate our troops and those who have served in the military.  This day is observed with great appreciation for our troops.  Its beginnings take us back to November 11, 1918, a day known to be the end of “the war to end all wars”.  November 11th has been down a bumpy road, ending at a destination where it is revered and recognized by the veterans and people of the United States.

Veteran’s Day was originally called “Armistice Day”, to honor veterans of World War I, in 1938.  But after World War II and the Korean War, veterans’ service organizations urged that “Armistice” be replaced with “Veterans”, in June 1954.

In June of 1968, the Uniform Holiday Bill was passed, which intended for Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day be celebrated on Mondays, giving three-day weekends for Federal employees.  Under this law, the first Veterans Day was on October 25, 1971.  After much confusion and lack of historical significance of October 25, President Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11 starting in 1978.

Today, the purpose of November 11 continues to be “a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good”.

The importance of Veterans Day is felt throughout the nation, especially for those with loved ones who have served or are serving in the military.  It puts a sense of pride and honor in our hearts.  Cookies by Design is observing Veterans Day with baskets of smiles.  Our specially-decorated cookies represent the admiration and patriotism that Americans feel on this day:
